Aloha!
I had a bright idea, 'Teeny Tiny Tales' of only 78 words.
It's much more of a challenge than you might think, and very like those picture puzzles where you slide the squares around in a grid, until they are in the right order.
But words are very restless, more, then less, then different.
To keep in the spirit of the idea — I even made this intro add up to 78 words.

Font Garden
I'm in the garden pruning the trebuchet and weeding out a few typos. The ellipses can get invasive — but I am fond of them... & I'm even thinking of adding an ampersand for variety.
Here's hoping that by making sure they are arranged neatly it will help them spread some enjoyment. I don't really have much room, so everything has to be really ordered and precise — saying that I'd better stop, as I only have space for 78...
Boring
I could still hear him despite the drills piercing whine... “It does 0 —140 in 3.7 seconds.”
Amazingly the extraction pliers couldn't quieten him... “It purrs like a cat.”
He could bore me even when my hand half filled his mouth, shouting now over the suction pump, although his face is half frozen — he is still chattering away.
Thankfully I'll get some peace now for six months — dental work on this particular ventriloquist is really hard on the ears...
Blind Date
I had a blind date, we both travelled lots — so it's hard to meet new people. I hope he has a good sense of humour...
Choosing carefully I put on my favourite silver trousers, tartan shoes, a bright yellow top hat, thick green lipstick and red eye shadow — 3 inches wide.
Waiting, I squeezed my car horn nervously — so he would definitely know it was me.
Two circus clowns meeting like this... some people would think it sad...
Crash
The speeding cars flew over the edge together dramatically, corkscrewing through the air like brightly coloured fireworks, travelling now on a final downward spiral.
This one–way journey ends quickly, with the sound of metal impacting — curiously mirroring the raw crunch of bones. A still silence follows as dark blood pools.
Running footsteps can be heard as a witness appears clutching a blanket, visibly shaken and with teary eyes, he peers over the top of the stairs...
“...Mummy..?”
Last Supper
Searching greedily, the rat passed by the sharp teeth that had barred its way. Shifting attention to where blank eyes stared; it began gnawing eagerly through this cramped hole, devouring the soft innards.
Eating its fill, and more — it grew in size. Soon restless it searched for escape, its exit had became too small now, causing it to panic.
The head toppled forward suddenly, breaking wide open — offering it freedom.
Rolling to a stop, the pumpkins day ended.
Polar
Unsteady on my feet, everything rocked from side to side — making me nauseous. I squinted at the world through my small white porthole, shaky damp fingers stroking its smooth surface and the bold name embossed on it.
Licking my parched lips, I waited patiently while the dull fog lifted. Having made this tiresome journey many times, today may well be the very last...
...At least my polo mints will freshen my breath... I am so sick of hangovers...
Not Waving...
Taking my glasses off, the pouring rain ran down my face. Far in the distance I could see her waving, I waved back, but she kept on... The dog ran ahead barking loudly, I started running — slowed by the thick mud.
Still waving, frantically now... fearing the worst, panic rose in me. Moving faster, adrenalin driving me forward... Getting closer, realising now I should have kept my glasses on...
She wasn't in distress... she was cleaning the windows...
New Dawn...
A huge shadow moves slowly across the old battered spaceship, further dulling the plastics little remaining shine. Noisily jerking, it blasts off. After many thrilling adventures its captain now ponders the future, on the last journey of his command.
Touching down gently on a new landscape, a mountain top like valley, one lined with black velvet — the final message is relayed:–
“Mission accomplished... Daddy... Daddy... can I have this cowboy hat? I'm bored with being a space explorer...”
Driven To It
Her hand slides gently across his lap, its warm feel returning him to the moment, focussing his attention sharply. Removing it, time stops as she coldly fires the words “I know...” at him. Hanging heavy now in the shared dark.
Caught off guard, his hesitant “Sorry... I'm so sorry...” eventually fills this new silence, masking the dull click of a seatbelt catch being released.
Whispering softly “I Know...” she puts her foot down, accelerating towards a concrete pillar.
Contact
The wife was in charge of the local neighbourhood watch, she was ever vigilant. “That rover is moving further down the hill every night” she informed me. “It must have a handbrake problem.”
Off out she went on a mission to find the owner, but to no avail. “I'll phone the garage up, their name is on the back...”
“That NASA Curiosity call centre is such a waste of time — I couldn't understand a word they were saying...”
Knot
I searched on the net how to do it, there are so many different ways it seems... My pulse raced wildly and palms were sweaty as trembling fingers tapped — my nerves were in tatters.
Tensing up, pulling tight... I felt the knots grip... I paused, taking a deep breath... how had I reached this point?... and how long before it would all be over?
Straightening my new tie I pondered — why is getting married so frightening...?
Odd One In
I never really fitted into the nest when I was younger, always thinking that I didn't look like any of the others in the family. When I was the smallest it was even more difficult — always being the odd one out.
I didn't feel better than the others though, we are just humble sparrows after all, the same the world over.
They are forever commenting that I repeat myself, but we all have our little foibles...
Cuckoo... Cuckoo...
Gone
Looking around I felt confused, momentarily struggling to remember where I was. Calmed by her gentle words, I now felt I was floating away.
Blonde hair glowed halo like with the sun behind her, the lingering touch of warm breath and sweet soft lips aroused me deeply.
The dream like wail of a siren broke the still silence, her breathless voice fading far into the distance... “It's no use — I've tried the kiss of life — he's gone now...”
Boy Racer
The chaotic movement suddenly stops, multiple cars now rest at angles as sharp as screams, the cool damp air is filled with moans.
Dazed expressions are frozen in the strobe effect illumination, as pounding music envelops the night — a frantic heartbeat shared by all.
A teenager clambers unsteadily to his feet, removes his baseball cap and takes in the scene at a glance.
“That's awesome... I so love the dodgems! I can't wait to get a real car...”
Testing
I looked deeply into his eyes, finding a misty effect, almost as if swirling... yet stationery. A pervading sense of discomfort visited me.
He whispers... “Your father is so sorry for all the hurt he caused, and your mother was very proud of you.” I shuffled uncomfortably in my seat, beginning to sweat profuse
ly — feeling very self – conscious.
I had been dreading this appointment all week — giving the local psychic an eye test always really freaks me out...
Bump
I'm glad that the police have towed that dumped car, it was a nasty experience rear ending it in the dark like that. The people who left it must be morons, they should come down hard on whoever was responsible.
Luckily for us it only did some minor damage to the bumper on our old Beagle... The police have gone a bit over the top though by putting up a big sign —
“1 accident in 4.5 billion years...”
Again
He is a total fashion victim, coming in here at least four times a year for new glasses. Always top of the range — only the most expensive.
Such a lovely man, so charismatic — always insists on me serving him. It's like he can snap his finger and I jump, eye test and new glasses — like clockwork.
“See you next time...”
I'm surprised a hypnotist is so wealthy... It's odd I can never remember exactly when he pays though...
End
“There's someone else...” It was over — he wanted a divorce. Having stated these cold facts, he turned his back, looking out of the window to his new future — no chance of discussion then.
Moments later I opened the front door, feeling stunned, so much had happened so quickly. Stepping into the night I thought of our wedding... so long ago. The promises, the dancing and laughter.
You know — I'm sure that carving knife was one of the presents...
Caught
The forensic evidence alone was compelling, a visible dark smear and the tiniest of fragments were hidden away like the first unnoticed snowflakes of winter.
The questioning would be brief, curt - and to the point. Subtle changes in expressions and eye contact would be studied, coupled with an uncomfortable body language, all together it would speak volumes — never mind the blushing...
But it was the unmistakable smell that confirmed my suspicions - “Johnny... have you eaten mummy's last cake...?”
Cut
I always seem to get really hungry at this time of day, these cuts make me think steak and chips would be nice — or maybe I should have some sticky ribs for a change... Hmmm... a nice roast breast really appeals — sometimes the thought of liver and onions can make my mouth water so much. Choices... choices...
This is the only problem with performing autopsies all day long — you never know what to eat when you get home.
Runner
I ran and I ran, many days had passed, filled with rifle shots and horse riders, arrows cut through the baying noise that never stopped... I ran till all quietened.
Moving, forever moving, weaving hour after hour. Hiding in darkness till morning light gracefully filled the sky. Running for my life — freedom waited in this new day...
Pushing open huge wooden doors, my breathing now slows... almost to a stop.
“I am an Olympic athlete... I seek asylum...”
Sharp
The ageing Samurai moved elegantly without thought or hesitation, one deft flick of the wrist and his finely honed blade completed its first graceful move.
He had carried out this sleek action times beyond count, but each was as if the first, a pure movement that sliced single atoms on its swift journey.
Stilling, he gazed ahead — momentarily looking himself in the eye. He was a man of great tradition... he would never use an electric razor.
Fate
It's the neighbours again... sounds just like indoor thunder. It always sends a shiver right through me, despite the number of times I have heard this — it always makes me emotional.
That banging sound... wherever I am, whatever I'm doing - it will make me feel the same way. It takes me right back to my beginnings, where some experiences will shape you — forever. Especially when you get hit hard...
I never will forget that first time... Beethovens 5th...
Bottled Up
Words had become so warped and distorted, twisted completely out of shape — near impossible to make any sense of. 'Love' repeating over and over... much was being said, but now too blurry to understand. Times journey seemingly having caused it to fade greatly.
Suddenly tension rose in me, realising I needed the whole story — right now. My hands clenched, firmly gripping the smooth and elegant neck — twisting tightly...
“I'm so excited! — I've found a message in a bottle...”
Home Sweet Home
My druggy neighbour is at it again, awake all night, annoying the whole neighbourhood — making a racket with his infernal screeching music. Him and his dozy mate who’s always hanging around — and they never seem to work. The police are always in and out at all hours — I'm getting really sick of it...
I've had enough tonight — I am going round to sort this out... Banging on his front door I shout — “Sherlock! - Stop playing that bloody violin!
Banksters
“Please give us your money...” said the gang — with smiles on their faces. At least they said please. These glass screens were meant to protect — but we were the wrong side of them. They have got us where they want us...
The assembled group shuffled nervously, avoiding eye contact — clutching bundles of notes. My hands trembled as they beckoned me forward — I passed my cash over — this really was daylight robbery...
“...I'd like to deposit £2,000 please.”
Blank
It's always an unsettling journey to begin, a vista of pure white emptiness lies ahead. When the initial footprint on this snowy path is made, the waiting unknowns stir. Moving forward, mysterious emotions push and pull, unfulfilled. Feelings rise like the beat of a fresh new heart.
The shrinking visual silence niggles, it comes and goes, twists are woven and turns surprise.
Dead ends are left and changing horizons fill.
Until you arrive... at that final full stop.
